Everything foreigners ask us about SIM cards, postpaid plans, and home internet in Korea — answered by the KT Global Store team in Itaewon.
Yes. Foreigners can get a KT SIM card in Korea without a Korean ID. With your passport alone you can activate a KT prepaid SIM the same day — no ARC, no Korean bank account, no Korean guarantor. Once your Alien Registration Card is issued you can move the same number to a postpaid plan. Our Itaewon Global Store handles the whole process in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Burmese, or Korean. See Prepaid SIM plans.
Yes. If you don't have an Alien Registration Card (ARC) yet, you can activate a KT prepaid SIM with only your passport. Walk into our Itaewon Global Store, pick a Welcome plan, and your line is active in about 15 minutes. See Prepaid SIM plans for prices.
Most of our customers follow this path: (1) On arrival, get a prepaid SIM with your passport. (2) Use that 010 number to open a Korean bank account or card. (3) Once your ARC is issued, switch the same number to a postpaid plan. (4) When you move into your home, add KT internet and bundle it with your mobile for a monthly discount. We can walk you through every step in your language — request a free consultation.
Prepaid activation takes about 15 minutes in store with your passport. Postpaid activation takes 20–30 minutes once you have your ARC and a Korean payment method. Home internet is usually installed the same day if you sign up before noon, otherwise within 1–2 days.
Prepaid lines are physical USIM only, so your phone needs a SIM slot. Some US-model iPhones are eSIM-only and can't use a prepaid SIM. Postpaid plans do support eSIM (activation fee ₩2,750 instead of ₩7,700 for a physical SIM) as long as your phone is unlocked.
Yes, on a postpaid plan. A KT eSIM is activated by QR code, so there is no physical card to collect and the fee is ₩2,750 instead of ₩7,700. Your phone must be eSIM-capable and carrier-unlocked, and you need your ARC plus a Korean payment method — the same requirements as any postpaid line. Prepaid lines are physical USIM only, so if you have just arrived without an ARC, start with a prepaid SIM and switch to an eSIM later while keeping your number. Bring your phone to our Itaewon Global Store and we will check eSIM support for you. See Postpaid plans.
Most unlocked phones sold in the last few years work on KT's 5G/LTE network. Make sure your phone is carrier-unlocked before you arrive. If it isn't, we also sell iPhones and Galaxy phones in store, and you can buy one at the same time as your line.
Yes — you get a standard 010 number, not a tourist-only 012 number. It works for calls, texts, and SMS verification codes. However, apps like Naver, Coupang, Kakao, and Korean banks verify your identity against your registration number, so full “본인인증” works only after you have your ARC and a postpaid line. Until then you can still use those services in limited ways and receive SMS codes.
Airport counters sell rental SIMs that are registered under the rental company's name, not yours — so they can never be converted to a postpaid plan, and you'll have to change your number later. Our Itaewon Global Store activates a regular KT prepaid line in your own name (passport), which can be switched to postpaid with the same number once you get your ARC. We're 10 m from Itaewon Station Exit 2, open daily 10:00–19:00.
Welcome plans are flat-rate for 30 days: Welcome 1 (1 GB) ₩35,000, Welcome 3 (3 GB) ₩45,000, Welcome 5 (5 GB) ₩55,000. All include 200 minutes and 200 SMS, and 5G data. After you use your high-speed data, you stay connected at a reduced speed — never cut off. The USIM card is ₩7,700 one-time. Details on the Prepaid SIM page.
Three ways: dial 1500 from your KT line (free) or 010-7201-1500 from any phone, recharge online at kt.com with a credit card, or visit any KT store nationwide and pay by cash, card, or bank transfer. Larger top-ups extend your line's validity for longer — ₩50,000 or more keeps it active for a full year.
Each top-up extends your validity period: ₩5,000 gives 30 days, ₩20,000 gives 120 days, ₩50,000–55,000 gives 365 days. When validity runs out, outgoing calls stop first, all service stops after 14 days, and the number is released after 44 days. Top up before day 44 to keep the same number.
A passport-only prepaid line is valid for 90 days. If you're staying longer, get your ARC and switch the same number to postpaid (see section 3). If you're only visiting, prepaid is all you need.
Your line simply suspends when the validity period expires. If you return, visit any of our stores with your passport and we can reactivate the same number as long as it hasn't passed the 44-day release window. Remaining balance is not refunded.
Yes. We offer prepaid internet in 3, 6, or 12-month packages with no long-term contract — useful for students, interns, and short-term residents. See Prepaid Internet.
Yes — a prepaid plan. A KT prepaid line needs only your passport, so you can walk out with a working Korean 010 number on your first day, before Immigration issues your ARC. Postpaid (monthly billing) is the part that requires an ARC and a Korean bank account or card. Because we register the prepaid line in your own name, you keep the same number when you convert it to postpaid later — an airport rental SIM cannot be converted. See Prepaid SIM plans.
No. Postpaid plans require a valid Alien Registration Card and a Korean payment method. If you don't have your ARC yet, start with a prepaid line and convert it later — you keep the same number.
Yes. This is the main reason to start with a KT prepaid line from our store rather than an airport tourist SIM. Bring your ARC and your prepaid phone, and we convert the same number to a postpaid plan — no new number, no need to update your contacts, bank, or apps.
It becomes credit on your KT account, not a cash refund. When you convert your prepaid line to a KT postpaid plan at any of our 4 stores, the amount you topped up for your last prepaid month is registered as a prepayment. Your monthly bills are deducted from that credit first, and nothing is charged to your bank account until it is used up. For example, if you charged ₩55,000, that ₩55,000 is applied to your bills until it runs out. Just mention it when you sign up.
Open one first. Most Korean banks let you open a basic account with your passport and a Korean phone number — which is exactly what your prepaid line gives you. Once you have the account (or a Korean-issued card) and your ARC, come back and we'll switch you to postpaid.
No. Monthly auto-payment for postpaid requires a Korean bank account or a Korean-issued credit/debit card. Foreign cards can't be registered for auto-pay, which is why we recommend opening a Korean account while you're still on prepaid.
Your valid ARC (D-2, D-4, E-series, F-series visas are all fine), a Korean bank account or Korean-issued card for auto-pay, and your passport as a secondary ID. Bring your unlocked phone, or buy one from us at the same time. Full checklist on the Postpaid page.
It depends on your visa, not on us. Each visa type has its own limit on how many prepaid and postpaid lines you can hold, and its own cap on how much you can put on instalments. Pick your visa on the Postpaid page or on any phone page and we'll show the exact limits that apply to you. Two things are always true: instalments and postpaid need your ARC and a Korean bank account or card, and you can always buy a phone outright with your passport alone. Final approval is made by KT at the store.
Once you have your ARC and a postpaid line in your own name, Korean identity verification (본인인증) works with your KT number — so you can fully use Naver, Coupang, Kakao services, delivery apps, and online banking. On a passport-only prepaid line, only SMS-code verification is available.
The foreigner-exclusive 5G Welcome plans: Welcome 1 (1 GB) from ₩25,950/mo, Welcome 3 (3 GB) from ₩33,450/mo, Welcome 5 (5 GB) from ₩38,750/mo, with the contract discount and Friendship Bundle applied. Every Welcome plan includes 001 Free international minutes. Regular KT plans (Basic, Choice) are also open to foreigners if you want more data. See Postpaid plans.
It's a perk built into Welcome plans: up to 120 international minutes per month to 38 countries, counted from your basic voice minutes, with no add-on fee. Dial 001 + country code + number. Minutes are deducted at 1× for Tier 1 countries (USA, China, Canada, Thailand…), 1.67× for Tier 2 (Japan, UK, Vietnam, Germany…), and 2.5× for Tier 3 (Philippines, Nepal, Uzbekistan…).
Postpaid plans can't be cancelled within the first 6 months. The 25% discount requires a 1- or 2-year contract; if you cancel after 6 months but before the contract ends, a discount-recovery fee proportional to the months used applies. For stays of a year or more, postpaid is still much cheaper than prepaid overall.
A discount for grouping 2–5 KT mobile lines — friends, roommates, partners, any nationality, Korean or foreign. Each line gets ₩1,100 to ₩11,000 off per month depending on its plan. You must apply by the end of the month after activation. Ask us at signup and we'll set it up.
Yes, and it's the biggest saving available to most foreigners, who usually can't use Korean family discounts. Choice plans get an extra 25% off with a KT internet line in the same household; other plans get ₩11,000–33,110/mo off through the bundle program. See section 5 and Home internet & TV.
With a 3-year contract, 500 Mbps starts at ₩38,500/mo and 1 Gbps at ₩42,900/mo, including a Wi-Fi router and security software. Bundle with one KT mobile line and it drops to ₩27,500–31,900/mo. Add Genie TV from ₩17,600/mo. Full table on the Internet & TV page.
Fast. If you sign up before noon, installation is often the same day; otherwise it's usually within 1–2 days. Around national holidays or during the summer monsoon season, when technicians are fully booked, it can take a few days longer. We book the technician for you and confirm the time in your language.
Your ARC, a Korean bank account or Korean-issued card for monthly payment, and your address including building name and unit number. If your building needs the landlord's or manager's approval for installation, it helps to have their contact — but that's rarely required for apartments and officetels.
Be honest with us about how long you plan to stay and we'll calculate the best option. The minimum period is 1 year: cancelling within the first year means an early-termination fee plus returning your sign-up gift. After 1 year, only a discount-recovery fee for the remaining months applies, and gifts don't need to be returned. For many people staying just 1 year, a 3-year contract cancelled at 12 months still costs less than a 1-year contract, because the monthly discount and free router rental are bigger.
Your internet moves with you. We transfer the service to your new address without penalty as long as KT service is available there — just tell us a few days before you move.
Yes. With a 3-year internet + Genie TV contract you choose either cash or a gift voucher of up to ₩450,000, or one home appliance from our gift list — for example a 50–55-inch Samsung or LG TV, a robot vacuum, a Dyson hair dryer, an iPad, or a washing machine (selection depends on your plan and current stock). Internet-only contracts get a smaller cash gift. Note that gifts must be returned or repaid if you cancel within the first year.
No. We arrange the appointment and explain what will happen beforehand in your language, and you can message us on WhatsApp during the installation if anything comes up.
